This blogger is particularly opposed to alcohol and drugs, two sides of the same coin which when abused leads to disaster for the abuser and usually anyone else in the vicinity.
It is, therefore, refreshing to read that Boris has banned alcohol from tubes and buses in London. For many people, travelling on public transport can be threatening and dangerous. It is the first step on a road to “broken windows” policing in London, which worked so effectively in New York under Guiliani. Too many people in the UK drink excessively and for some this turns to violence.
The other problem at the moment, of course, is drugs, especially cannabis which David Davis points out has been reclassified too late.
The problems of crime caused by alcohol and drugs have got worse under Labour, whose MPs and ministers take taxis or ministerial limousines everywhere. Labour politicians in their Islington abodes are out of touch with the people who suffer from these crimes. Notably, the working class suffer most from drink and drunk related antisocial behaviour - and will hopefully send Brown a message at Crewe & Nantwich on the 22nd May.
Not only has Labour betrayed the working class with its abolition of the 10p tax rate (which must be stopped by Labour MPs voting against it in Parliament, and if not it should be reversed by the next Tory Government), but Labour seems incapable of dealing with crime.
The murder of Rhys Jones last summer was an indicator to people that crime had got out of control; that Labour, especially the current Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, was incapable ( or unwilling ) of dealing with it. Somebody had better deal with it soon - this move by Boris is a great start and more of the same will be appreciated.
